OAK STREET

Persistent flooding issues led the new owners of this property in Alexandria, VA to turn to FORM to reconsider the gardens more holistically, resolving drainage concerns while creating serene and welcoming outdoor spaces. The front garden brings softness and seasonal interest to a busy pedestrian street through spring-focused planting and bulb displays inspired by the homeowner’s favorite tulips. In the rear yard, a dry stream along one side channels water toward a rain garden and drywell, while a new elevated deck provides space for outdoor dining and lounge seating and helps protect the existing willow oak. An elliptical lawn framed in fieldstone creates harmony and balance, while native woodland plantings, subtle path lighting, and an aerial hornbeam hedge add privacy, softness, and an immersive garden atmosphere.
